Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month

In 1993 the Government of Canada decided to make October the Autism Awareness Month, so we all gain a better understanding. This year our message is simple – “Love is Acceptance.” While increased awareness is great, we wish for greater acceptance. So we picked this theme because we acknowledge that accepting people on the Autism spectrum for who they are creates a space of empathy, understanding and genuine respect for each other. It might sound too obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t do this. Help us share our message – “Love is Acceptance.”

Occasio Respite

No matter how many more twists and turns 2020 takes, Occasio helps your child stay active, make friends and have fun! Activities are offered three times a week during evenings, as well as on weekends. Here is what we’ve planned for this month:

Peer Support Groups

We try to provide as many opportunities as possible. If you need support, please attend one of the groups or call the office for immediate assistance. And you can connect with your fellow Autism Edmonton members from the comfort of your home. Here is a list of our upcoming events:

Pantry Food Program

The number of families struggling to put adequate food on the table remains at an all-time high. If you require a food hamper, please book an appointment by calling us at 780-453-3971 ext. 1. Our Pantry Food Program is open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. When you come in, you will need to follow our COVID protocols, including maintain a physical distancing of 2 metres and wear PPE (provided for you inside). Please note, only one visitor is allowed inside at a time, and all visitors must be over 18.

For Autistic Adults: Meeting Others On the Spectrum

Are you an Autistic adult who would like to meet new people? Perhaps learn something new? Come join the League Program – here is what the League is up to this month:

  • Sat, Oct 3 – Arts and Crafts
  • Wed, Oct 14 – Overklocked
  • Sat, Oct 24 – Movie Night
  • Sat, Oct 31 – Halloween party
